By the 1940s, Huxley had
relocated to California, where he
mingled with mystics, scientists,
and Hollywood screenwriters. His
interests turned inward — toward
spirituality, Eastern philosophy,
and altered states of
consciousness. The Perennial
Philosophy (1945) offered a
sweeping synthesis of spiritual
traditions, while The Doors of
Perception (1954) chronicled his
mescaline experiments and
inspired a generation of
psychonauts (and a certain rock
band).
